fish + pharmaceuticals

2019 research + mapping

summary/ Capable of spatial compression and expansion, the use of social media technologies are linked to increased rates in anxiety, depression and the increased use of pharmaceuticals to manage these conditions. The material components of these pharmaceuticals flow through our systems and our waterways into the systems of previously healthy fish who are numbed, lose interest in food, and become attracted to light in spite of predators: demonstrating behavioral changes with serious implications for ecosystem balances. The research, GIS mapping, scripting and final composed diptych reveal cultural pollution and corresponding suffering which emanates beyond the binaries and boundaries of a body, species, or single materiality. The drawings exposes the physical and emotional resonances that occur within a shared environment.
